A strange pair...or an odd couple?

Our walk started out along a local lane, the same lane we litter-picked recently. We stood for quite some time trying to figure out the story behind this particular litter - if indeed it is litter.

You probably haven't spotted it yet. Look just above the gate post.

As we got closer we realised we were looking at a pair of stripy black and white stockings! Not just a pair of stripy black and white stockings hanging in the hedge - oh no. They're PEGGED to a branch!

So what do you think is the story? I can just about imagine someone getting their stockings wet in the long grass and deciding to take them off and put them to dry in the hedge, maybe while having a picnic. But who on earth takes clothes pegs out in their pocket?

Answers on a postcard please!

Litter louts part 2

Way back when I blogged about a litter-picking walk.

We've often taken a small plastic bag out walking since, but yesterday we did another marathon litter pick.

One bin bag and one largish shopping bag later - we had to admit we couldn't carry any more. In fact, a mile from home I gave up and sat with the rubbish while husband went to fetch the car.

Why do people do it? In one field we found what had presumably been a party, cans and bottles everywhere. the revellers had even left 2 full bottles behind, but there was rather too much mud to put them in my fridge.

This last "altered" bottle - hmmm, is it something to do with illicit substances?

Dogs...and their owners.

*rant alert*

I live in a beautiful semi-rural area in Kent, and I like to walk. When it's muddy, I walk to town on a hard-surfaced path bordering open fields, then walk back across country. I think the shopkeepers approve of me doing it that way around, it saves them cleaning their carpets!

So far - so good.

The path is used by a lot of dog-owners, so the council have kindly provided a bin for them to dispose of their dog's little offerings.

"Aha" you're thinking - I know what she's going to rant about. She's going to rant about the dog-owners who don't clear up.

But no. I don't like dog mess underfoot (who would?) but many, maybe most, of the dog walkers I see these days do clear up after their pet.

In any case, the path is quite wide, and I am more than capable of stepping around these little mementoes.

No, my rant is reserved for the new breed of dog-owners who bizarrely bag up their pet's offerings and then chuck it, bag and all, into the buishes as (maybe?) an exhibition of modern art.

Why do they do that? It makes no sense to me. I get that they don't want to carry around a bag of poo - who would? But surely if you want to chuck it off the path into the bushes, there's no benefit to bagging it up first? Even if the bag is biodegradable it isn't going to happen any time soon! (And some of the bags on my regular routes have been there a long time)

Maybe they think the council employs someone to go around looking for their little bags of doggypoo?

*rant over*

Bottom (no pun intended) line is - this is the type of dog I like!

I'm going to be famous!

Great excitement here today, I met with a local journalist!

This was because a few weeks ago I got fed up with moaning about litter and decided to do something about it. We took a bin bag with us on our regular walk and picked up no less than 5 kilos before we gave up.

There were: 19 plastic bottles, 3 glass bottles, 1 drinking glass, 22 cans, a hubcap, a clipboard, a 5L container of antifreeze and...these we had to leave behind...a microwave, 2 tyres and a rubber carmat.

Today, we took the reporter to photograph the microwave and I collected the car mat and some more rubbish. Amusingly the 2 tyres had bred, and there are now 3.

But - the real excitement is that I mentioned my etsy store, and he said he'd come back and do a story on me maybe next week! I will be knitting my nifty little heart out till then!
