it's fun to share - new collaborative knitted dinosaurs!

Aren't they gorgeous? I created the pattern using pictures drawn by the talented MissBiss of Etsy shop bissandpieces,

Each dinosaur (also known as bisosaurus!) is about 4 inches (10cm high) and designed to match Biss's new baby cards,

 "it's a boy" and

I developed a new-to-me technique to knit them because I wanted to make them as child-friendly (ie indestructible) as possible. The head, body and tail are knitted all in one piece on double pointed needles, then I threaded my yarn right through the body  and started knitting the first arm on the opposite side to the ball  - does that make sense? - leaving the poor dinosaur hanging from the needles! Then once the first arm was finished, I started again on the other side - so the arms are attached by the yarn through the body, as well as being stitched on securely.

I don't have much time for knitting right now as it's nearly house moving time yet again, so for now there is just one of each in stock.

The Flash, fastest meerkat in the world!

Faster than a speeding bullet... The Flash comes with his own little wooden block to help him pose in running-mode!

I decided to make his mask as a hood, so he can pull it back to show his cute little meerkat face...

or of course he can pull his hood back up and stay superheroic!

First one off the needles available here on folksy or on etsy

Meerkat Makeovers

My designs have improved over the years and every now and then someone decides they need a makeover. This week it has been the turn of a few superkats...
WonderWoman (above) now has hair and bracelets, she can be found on etsy or folksy.

Supergirl has had a change of hairstyle: find her on folksy or etsy

And finally Flash Gordon has also been to the hairdresser! Etsy or folksy as before...

I also have one brand new meerkat to list...pop back tomorrow to see The Flash, Sheldon's favourite!

staying within the lines

Do you love giveaways? I must admit I sometimes think I'm addicted...but you don't win unless you enter! I was very pleased to win JordanDene's superhero ammo belt because it meant I had a perfect excuse for a spot of colouring in!

Perhaps there's a bigger question here - why do I own a steampunk colouring book? You'd have to ask my son, he gave it to me last year. And why not?

I promised some online friends a picture of me wearing it when it came, but I'm afraid I no longer fit into something designed for a 2-9 year old, so I shall be passing it along to a little friend just as soon as I've finished my picture!

You can see in JordanDene's instruction leaflet how to wear it - and actually, Jordan does make an adult sized version, but the giveaway I entered was for a childsized superhero.

Thanks Jordan - if you know someone who would love to wear their crayons instead of leaving them in the sofa for the cat to eat, why not head over to JordanDene on Etsy where she currently has 54 different styles of crayon ammo belts and much much more.

Christmas Last Shipping Dates

It's that time of year again, when online sellers enter a state of panic, worrying that parcels won't arrive in time! I know a really good way of making sure they arrive - it's the technique known as BUY EARLY.

Royal Mail have issued their optimistic dates for last shipping for Christmas arrival, but my experience is that they mean "it'll probably arrive by December 24th" and that is just not good enough. So I'm going to give an extra 2 weeks for international parcels...which means that my last recommended shipping dates will be:

Wednesday 21st November : Asia, Australia, Far East (including Japan) New Zealand
Friday 23rd November         : Africa, Caribbean, Central America, Middle East and South America
Monday 26th November      : Canada, Eastern Europe and USA
Wednesday 28th November : Western Europe
Thursday 6th December       : UK

I will still ship after those dates if you buy - but it's down to you to do the worrying :-)

I will be removing "knit to order" items from my shops within the next few weeks, so please please please buy early to avoid disappointment - or buy a gift card from my Etsy shop so that your gift recipient can choose for themselves.

Honey Badger

A new critter - and it's all Supersock's fault. Honey Badger don't care!

Supersock started it with a honeybadger ring and reminded me of Randall's fabulous video - be warned, the soundtrack is not suitable for small children or the workplace.

Ewwww! What's that in its mouth?

Oh that's nasty! A snake - with blood and gore dripping! Look at those teeth! It just takes what it wants.

He can climb trees - are you kidding me?

The honey badger. How precious! Look at those claws!

Want to see Supersock's honeybadger ring? NEED a knitted honeybadger? He's here

Making a list, checking it twice

Hmmmm, where did I put that outfit? Oh here it is:

Better see if it still fits

Well, trousers are OK, that's a relief. Bit of a struggle getting the tail through the hole, but then I've always been proud of my tail girth.

Beard's fine.

Hmm. Slight problem with the jacket, excuse me a minute, just need to get some padding.

It's a bit hot with that padding under my coat! Can't have a slim Santa though, can we?

If you know someone who's on the "good" list, it's never too early to shop for a handmade Christmas!

The Force is with you!

Long long ago, in a galaxy far far away.... well, a garden in East Sussex to be precise...the Star Wars Meerkat Empire has grown! Using the Force, I've knitted Luke, Leia, Han Solo, and the remarkably cute Darth Vader. Boba Fett has also been meerkatted, and just to cover all options Luke is also available as a ferret (rumour has it, some people actually don't adore meerkats...can it be so?) Can you imagine how much fun I've had role-playing?

 "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi"

"I am your father, Luke"

Han Solo:You like me because I'm a scoundrel. There aren't enough scoundrels in your life.
Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

All available from Folksy and Etsy or Zibbet (just ask and I'll add them there)

Etsy relevancy - trying to become more relevant!

Let me state from the start I am a long way from being an expert. This is just some notes on *MY* journey towards becoming more relevant since the recent changes. I'd be more than happy to hear your own thoughts - especially if your own investigation has reached entirely different conclusions.

I'm trying to think like a buyer.

When a buyer comes to Etsy, there are several ways to search. I think the main two ways are directly into the search bar, or by looking into categories. (Of course, we also hope to be found by people searching google - and that's a whole other story).

Search (not categories)

The key here seems to be to use the right words at the beginning of your title, and the right pairs or groupings of words. By "right words" I mean you need to try to match what your buyer is searching for. Etsy has changed the rules about "one tag, one word" because of relevancy, so if someone searches for "meerkat chef" and I have "Meerkat chef" at the beginning of my title, and as a tag, I will be more relevant than if I had "meerkat" as one tag and "chef" as another.

Looking at my shop stats has shown me which of my various tags are being successfully used by people who have found my shop. I have seen people on the forums saying they're switching to using those tags more and more - but I'd say almost the opposite. I'm more interested in the people who are NOT yet finding me.

Not surprisingly, many people find me using the term "star trek meerkat" but I think they probably already know about me. If I type "star trek meerkat" into the search bar it turns up 21 items - and guess what? They're all mine!

What about those people who've never heard of my work, and don't even know a star trek meerkat exists - but who may well like one if they find it by accident?

I brainstormed other possible searches for the same characters: star trek animals, scifi animal, science fiction animal, animal character and made sure I would be found on each of those searches by tweaking my tags and titles - and then on to the other meerkats. Yes, it's a long slow job.

Search by categories

Now this opens up a whole new can of beans. Obviously I'd like to be found in as many different categories as possible, so I've been investigating where my kats might fit.

Only ONE main top-level category can be chosen, but it seems you can then have as many sub-categories as you can fit (from that same top level category)

Browsing through "Categories" with a particular meerkat in mind makes it clear how complex this all is!

His top-level category could be "Art". This then gives 12 sub-categories, of which I think I could use "Fiber Art" or "Sculpture".

"Fiber Art" gives 9 sub-sub categories - Art Doll, Knitting, and Soft Sculpture are all possibilities.

If I'd gone with Sculpture, I could now select Animal or Fiber.

On the other hand - maybe I don't like Art as a top level.

Dolls and miniatures gives me even more possibilities to play with! Sub categories include animals, art doll, miniature, plush, soft sculpture, fantasy, anthropomorphic, figurines, geekery, weird, scifi - and it goes on.

The BIG ISSUE here is that tags for categories and sub-categories must be exact. So even though it's now fine for me to use "scifi animal" as a tag, because a buyer might use that phrase in a search and therefore I'd be more relevant - that tag will NOT mean I show up in the scifi or animals SubCategory. To do that, I need separate tags for each sub cat - one for scifi and and one for animals. It also matters, apparently, whether you put animal or animals with an "s".

Confused yet? Me too. So what I'm now trying to do is use some tags that focus on category searches and some that focus on "general" searches.

Anecdotal evidence suggests relevancy is also helped by being included in treasuries and favourites - so a few tags need reserving for that too! My treasury inclusions are often team-based, so I need to tag for teams, and colours, and themes...

And in my odd moments, I actually try to get some knitting done...

As I said in the beginning - I'd love to hear your thoughts.

The Royal Wedding...Meerkat style!

I don't know if you missed the news ;-) but Prince William is getting wed.

The Palace haven't released details of what anybody is wearing, and he has quite a few military uniforms to choose from.

HelloMagazine asked readers to vote, but I don't think they'll have the final say...

Deciding how to knit MeerkatKate was rather easier! She's wearing a stylish white off-the-shoulders dress which is much longer at the back, extending to a long train. She has a further train of sequined netting which is matched by her long veil. As these are hard times in the UK she has settled for a simple necklace of silver beads and a small posy of mixed wildflowers which she carries with her left hand in front to show off the engagement bling.

Whichever uniform Prince Willaim wears, he'll no doubt wear his Jubilee medal, the blue sash which shows he is a Knight of the Garter and the Star which shows he is a Royal serving member of the Armed Forces.

The Royal Meerkats are favouring the the Air Force uniform, with its longline belted tunic...

...or maybe the Royal Navy? You'll note he isn't wearing the sash here - the butler had spent a long time shining up the double-breasted buttons and he promised not to cover them up.

Available only at Zibbet at the moment (see more pics there) but will come to my Etsy and Folksy shops soon if you can wait!

A handmade Christmas

As I'm taking down the decorations, I thought I'd share with you some of my handmade festive lovelies:

This is probably the oldest made-by-me decoration, I embroidered these pictures around 20 years ago I think. They're not my own designs, they're from a book. Each round picture is about 4 inches across (10cm).

One of my favourites, this bauble is at least 3 inches across and is handpainted on the INSIDE. I can't get my head around that, painting the topmost detail FIRST and the background last. It doesn't show in the photo, but it's translucent glass and the fairy lights shine through making it glow. A pupil gave it to me back in my teaching days, a lovely memento.

Complete contrast! I made this a few weeks before Christmas. I only recently learnt how to knit with beads already on my yarn (instead of sewing them on at the end) and wanted to see what I could create. I might make more next year, but with better quality beads (these were from the bottom of the stash!)

These cute little ice skates were made by Daisy and bought from her shop on folksy, Daisy and I competed for a prize in Folksy's Christmas competition and the skates were her entry - I had to have a pair! I won, but where my photo has gone is a mystery to me. From what I remember, I made a hanging decoration with lots of tiny parcels made origami-style from recycled Christmas cards.

Santa #1 came from Erica, also known as Littleworm on Etsy. We first "met" on a mad rhyming thread on the forum there. You could promote anything you liked, as often as you liked - but it all had to be in rhyme!

Santa #2 is from Creations by Gena on Zibbet - is't he gorgeous? Gena had to investigate international shipping for me, and I'm very glad she did!

We also had some handmade gifts of course!

I created the pigeon for my daughter (she's 23!) because she loves the book. Behind him you can just about see some handmade body scrub from my son's girlfriend - thanks Helen, it smells wonderful!

My son wore his hat-and-beard combo pretty much continuously although for some reason he unbuttoned the beard and removed it before we went outside.

My older son and girlfriend made me a Meerkat Nativity apron - such a surprise! They must have thought Mr Nifty deserved some help in the kitchen this year!

Finally - the Christmas cake. It's a tradition to decorate our rich fruit Christmas cakes in the UK., although I've recently learnt this is one tradition that has not crossed the pond to the States.

Only (how many?) days to go till next Christmas... but in the meantime, don't forget to enter my giveaway!
