Nature's sculptures

We had a picnic lunch on an empty beach at Rye today, sitting next to a row of groynes that had been sculpted by Nature.

It's not "fine art" photography, but it quite definitely is "fine art" - aren't they lovely?

so I've never heard of groynes. It looks like wood? Were they put there by someone, or naturally there? I love how they look ...especially with the moss.

Thanks rose - you know, I almost put in an explanation but thought surely they're international...turns out they're groIns in USA, another of our transatlantic language shifts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groyne

they're coastal defences, intended to prevent longshore drift erosion. This one has obviously seen better days - should be taller, with horizontal struts. The artistic looking holes are where the horizontals used to be bolted to the verticals.

They are gorgeous! The human hand couldn't have done it more beautifully. Nature is a master artist.

Love the pictures, it's been too long since we've been to a beach. I always smirked when reading the signs that said "Do Not Swim Near The Groyns" when I was younger ;-)
